Week 3 Reflection
This week we were introduced to two new concepts: Addressing Big Problems and Root Cause Analysis. We learned how to study and understand the problems that social innovation addresses. Solutions must not only address a legitimate social issue but they must also be determined by the root cause analysis. We took a deep dive into understanding more of what the root cause analysis means and we learned more about the tie between the gospel and social innovation.
My favorite resource we studied this week was the Ted Talk "Wicked Problems", it was pretty moving. This talk was introduced to us in 2014 when there was a large political unrest going on in the United States and many people were divided politically. There were many questions on how people consumed their information and the resources on how they consumed their information. The speakers in this talk did an amazing of helping us understand how we can become more unbiased in the information we gain, and how we can ask certain questions to gain a deeper clear perspective. The greatest thing was the multiple choice questions at the beginning of the video, how many people are divided on certain topics. The speaker shows us it is basically not our fault that we are ignorant. It is because of our environment, the limited beliefs of our teachers, a personal bias. The next problem is from our teachers, of outdated world view, even though their intentions are good. The world is constantly changing, so there is not clear way to update it constantly. We also have News Bias, we are mostly fed sensational news and fear-based news. It is all skewed sources of information.
To be honest, I'm a bit nervous to dig deeper into my social issue because it is close to my heart. My mother struggles with many health issues, and I want to help her. I'm afraid as I look more into my social issue, I will find more issues and no clear solution. As we study throughout the weeks, we learn that social issues don't have clear solutions. Even though I was very hopeful at the beginning of our class, I'm saddened. I am hoping my stance will change as we study more.
