W01 Reflection

This week, was a great introduction to Social Innovation and the impact it can make on the world around us. Problems arise in the world, and people dedicate their lives to finding solutions and even their passion for work. We were introduced to the film "Ambition" where we were introduced to the impact Social Entrepreneurship has on the world. The Film is inspiring and we can see firsthand the people who take social issues and make it their life's mission to find changes. It is inspiring because as students and viewers you can see the lives that are being changed and affected by social Entrepreneurship work. Social Innovation is defined as the result of the intentional work of people trying to make positive change happen by addressing these complex problems at the roots as seen in the "What is Social Innovation?" video. We also were introduced to the impact that this very class had on students at BYU, some of them were life-changing positive changes.

My favorite video from this week's study was the Ballard Center: Social Innovation Lives Here. I was surprised by the impact that the Ballard Center made on the world and students' lives. I was moved by the work of Daniel Blake because food waste is actually something I personally am against. To see someone work so hard to fix this issue and see how successful he was in this pursuit was inspiring for me. It sparked some questions for me, how can I start in my own community? I always knew that food waste was not good for our environment and the earth. However, I did not know to what extent. In this video, I learned that it creates methane which comes from rotting food, and damages the earth. Not only did this inspire me, it actually made me angry that the government did not find a solution for this.

Social Innovation is more prevalent today because of the onset of the internet and social media, we have easy access to information that is not only in our communities. Before the internet, we were not able to gain access to information and any issues that were outside of our direct community. Now that we are aware of other areas and issues, we have more of a responsibility to act and become socially active in aiding our environment around the world.
